OAK-D-Lite takes the affordability idea and pushes it one step forward. Having the same SpatialAI functionality as the OAK-D except with a smaller weight and form factor gives you the opportunity to create all sorts of projects.

OAK-D-Lite is heavily open source(including being able to download the design files) so you can dig in and change anything you want. It works with Mac Windows Ubuntu Raspberry Pi OS, and the Jetson series OSs with pre-built binaries regularly released for all of them.

It is The Swiss Army Knife of Computer Vision that is truly meant to be used by anyone, anywhere.

  • Neural Inference (object detection, image classification, semantic segmentation, pose estimation)
  • Object tracking
  • 3D Object Tracking (up to 20 objects with a unique ID)
  • 3D Object Localization
  • H.264 & H.265 Encoding (HEVC, 1080P, and 4K Video) - A Pi Zero can record 4K/30 FPS video with this
  • Motion Estimation (allows real-time background subtraction)
  • Feature Tracking (optical, and visual-inertial navigation)
  • Corner Detection
  • Stereo Depth (including median filtering, extended disparity and subpixel possible for wider dynamic range
  • Warp/Dewarp - support for additional lenses for fish-eye applications
  • JPEG Encoding
  • MJPEG Encoding for easy web streaming
  • Compatible with most of OAK-D features
  • Enclosure compatible with standard tripod mount (1/4”-20)
  • Support for on-board stereo and RGB camera modules
  • USB 3.1 Gen1 Type-C

Fixed Focus vs Auto Focus?

If you are unsure on which version to get, the table below compares the main differences between the two.

Fixed Focus Auto Focus
Has a much further-out minimum focus distance Can clearly focus objects as close as 8cm, while also being able to focus objects at distance.
Handles vibration better. If the camera is under heavy vibration, the lens won’t vibrate which would lead to blurry images (drones, robots, on machines, etc.) Can focus on objects dynamically, which is mainly useful for objects that are within 30cm of OAK-D-Lite.
Better for RGB depth alignment (as the lens does not move) Does not work properly in Heavy-Vibration applications (e.g. drones, bikes w/out suspension, etc.)
Objects have to be at least 30cm away to be in focus
